1. WHAT WORK EXPERIENCE DO YOU WANT TO SHARE WITH YOUR NEW COWORKERS?
- After finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, I began working for the USDA, in part, to help with economy stabilization and sustainability through commodity procurement in order to supplement government sponsored agencies (military, food banks, school lunch programs, etc.).  I am very fortunate to have been on this career path for five years; however, I want to focus more on commodity sustainability.  I have seen the effects of this firsthand as a volunteer at California Wildlife Center in Malibu, CA, working with hundreds of stranded California sea lions and northern elephant seals pups. I have participated in public education about this dire situation. I have also assisted in beach rescues of animals in distress, the rehabilitation of animals rescued (feed and medicine preparation and dispersal, restraint, medical and overall health checks, and cage maintenance), autopsies, and releases. I finished my Master’s degree in Ecology and Sustainability at the California State University, Stanislaus. I was primarily interested in forage fish and their physiological response to environmental stressors (temperature, salinity, DO, pH, eutrophication, pollution, etc.). I have conducted research for my Master's thesis on surf smelt (Hypomesus pretiosus) located in Puget Sound, WA and their physiological response to chronic thermal and osmotic stress. I developed partnerships with NOAA NWFSC, WDFW and Nisqually and Tulilip tribal biologists as well as applied and received several grants for funding my research. I have also built a salt water flow-through chronic environmental exposure system at Moss Landing Marine Lab using barrels that I procured a donation from Elk Grove Milling. For the last 6 years I have been studying fish respond to environmental stressors ranging from biotic (such as parasites and pathogens) to abiotic (such as poor water quality and toxicants). I used those responses to map population stress levels across spatial and temporal contexts and assisted in developing management tools for assessing population health for Chinook salmon.
