Departmental Accomplishments January, 2025

Please join me in reading about what our Natural Resources, Youth Services, Children & Family Services , Facilities and the Finance departments have been up to for the month of January!

HAVE ANY EMPLOYEES RECIEVED A CERTIFICATION THIS MONTH? OR COMPLETED A TRAINING? 
Josh Carterattended the EPA Virtual Water Quality Standards Academy.
Marla Powers attended coastal Training-Alternantives to Bulkheads and the Climate Resilience Riparian Restorian Workshop.

HAVE ANY GOALS BEEN MET THIS MONTH? WHO REACHED THEM?

Miranda Ives finished the Egg take data from 2014-2024. Putting hard copy information in spreadsheets. 
The finfish program sent our all their fisheries samples and cards for the season and finished the historical to present hatchery eff take data. 
The DNR Forest & Fish bi-annual reporting was completed.
The Environmental team presented the draft Title 34 standards to the interdepartmental meeting, along with maps of critical areas and the wildlife corridor. 
Christina Charles met the goals for submitting the 2025 Budget plans into Solver.

ARE ANY GRANTS BEING UTILIZED? WHAT FOR?

We are using the BIA Invasive Species Grant for green crab research planning. 
The tribal Cimate Resillience grant was used to build research crab pots, purchase field gear, and to work with PGST fishers on setting preliminary test pots. 
The department has been working on getting a contract in place for the 2014, 2018, and 2019 combined Disaster Relief funding that will be used for direct fisher payments and other proejcts. 
The FY21. Exchange Network Grant recieved a 1-year extension to the performance period and will migrate the Strong Data app to a newer framework. We are also using the Clean Water Act 106 Funding to collect water quality data. 

WANT TO HIGHLIGHT OR GIVE A SHOUTOUT TO ANY INDIVIDUALS THIS MONTH?
We would like to give shoutouts to community member Brad Abad and staff member, Tyler Sullivan for helping with the initial crab sampling efforts.
We would like to recognize Issac Purser and Shane Baze who have been diligently working on creating an alder wood pile for Tribal Elders using windfallen and hazard trees from around the reservation.
We would like to highlight the Environmental Team for all their hard work. They did a lot of GIS work for the critical areas map and updated the maps. They are developing a strategic outreach plan, have reviewed many permits and worked on a Petition for Review to the Growth Management Hearings Board for the Kitsap County Critical Area Ordinance update. Staff have attended the Kitsap Environmental Coalition, Kingston Community Advisory Council and Culver Injunction meetings. 

ANY PROJECTS THAT YOU COMPLETED THIS MONTH?
The Forestry program was able to get 15 acres of scotchbroom mechanically removed from the Hansville block property.
The Finfish program completed hatchery egg take data.
In December we were able to coordinate the Title 34 Interdepartmental Meeting, to share the Title 34 standards and critical areas map. This has allowed us to move to the next phase in Title 34. 
The Natural Resources Department had their annual Winter Gathering event, including cultural workshops lead by the Cultural Resources Department and a showing of the Fish War movie at the Kingston Firehouse theater.

ANY PROJECTS THAT YOU COMPLETED THIS MONTH?
The Youth Services team with Scott Moon as lead coordinator hosted the first Men's Basketball Tournament since covid. 
In 2025 began offering lunch time open gym houes from 12-2pm T-Th for community and staff.

Shayna Reynolds is enrolled in SNAP eligibility training program, which runs for 6 weeks. 

HAVE ANY GOALS BEEN MET THIS MONTH? WHICH INDIVIDUAL(S) REACHED THEM?
An new Assistant Director, Maria Huynh, will officially began her new role on January 15,2025.

ARE ANY GRANTS BEING UTILIZED? WHAT FOR?
All of our current grants are being utilized.

John and Michelle completed a leadership training in Decemeber and Ron is taking the training later this month.

The metal building by the youth center has been cleaned completely and is in the process of being remodeled

Jonathan Smart attended the Travel Procedures training in Novemeber 2024.

ANY PROJECTS THAT YOU COMPLETED THIS MONTH?
Accounting AP staff produced a record number of EFT's and checks due to the Member Benefits Assistance Program.
