Department Accomplishments For March, 2024!

'It's good that you're here.' Please refer to the link at the bottom of the blog for the correct pronunciation in S'Klallam. Please join me in reading about what some of our departments have been up to for the month of March. :)

Have any employees received a certification this month? Or completed a training?
- Yes! Tina and Kara both graduated from a two year course called 'Tribal Housing Excellence Academy.'

Have any goals been met this month? Which individual(s) reached them?
- Rhonda, Katarina, and Cathy completed a course in Low Income Housing Tax Credit to be compliant with Washington State regulations for qualifying tenants for Warrior Ridge amongst other compliance issues - this requires annual recertification. 

Are any grants being utilized? What for?
- Housing has several grants to assist Tribal Members - Home Repair, Down Payment Assistance, and Rental Move-In Assistance for higher income Tribal Members. 

Want to highlight or give a shoutout to any individuals this month?
- Stormy, for joining Housing and hitting the ground 'running.' 

Any projects that you completed this month?
- We started a floor replacement project this week and its anticipated to be completed next week.

Have any employees received a certification this month? Or completed a training?
- Garrett Sitting Dog and Cassandra Sullivan completed 16 hours of Safe Capture - Chemical Immobilization of Animals Training. Hans Daubenberger, Khadijah Homolka, Shane Baze and Julianna Sullivan completed the Maritime Medical Program and Advanced First Aid/CPR Training. Julianna Sullivan completed the online Seafood HACCP Training. Emma Saas and Courtney Hart attended a training held by SeaGrant's Crab team to become certified to maintain Green Crab Traps out at Point Julia. Miranda Ives has completed Halibut Sampling training. 

Have any goals been met this month? Which individual(s) reached them?
- We have secured funding from the Department of Defense to study the effectiveness of the 'FGS' (Fish Guidance System) at the Hood Canal Bridge for the Hood Canal Bridge Ecosystem Impact Assessment (Hood Canal Bridge Project).

Are any grants being utilized? What for?
- BIA Hatchery Cyclic Maintenace grant was used to purchase a new Fish Egg Sorter for use at the Hatchery. Using PCSRF funding, we have prepped the 'TAST' (sound deterrence device) component of the Hood Canal Bridge Project. Using EPA PSP funding, we began our habitat mapping component of the Bull Kelp in Portage Canal for the Admiralty Inlet and Hood Canal Nearshore Habitat Assessment (Kelp Project). Using BIA ESA funding, we have purchased supplies and prepped the Wet Lab for tagging Coho Salmon for our telemetry component of the Kelp Project. 

Want to highlight or give a shoutout to any individuals this month?
- We would like to highlight the whole Habitat, Research and Monitoring Team; which includes Hans Daubenberger, Julianna Sullivan, Khadijah Homolka and Shane Baze because it's been a challenging month balancing all the projects they have going on and everyone did an amazing job. We want to give a shoutout to Miranda Ives for being self-sufficient in her new role and going above and beyond delving into fisheries management, husbandry and ecology.
